Do solar panels perform on a north-facing roof?
Yes, they can, but they will not produce as much as south, east or west facing panels. In the UK, a north facing roof gets less direct sunlight, which means lower output.
In summer, the Sun takes a higher path across the sky, giving longer daylight hours and more direct light, even reaching north facing roofs for much of the day. In winter, the Sun’s path is lower and shorter, so north facing panels get less light and generate less energy.
With the right design, higher efficiency panels and inverters, a north facing roof can still see solid results. In fact, a panel today on a north facing roof is likely to produce a similar amount of power compared to a 15 year old panel on a south facing roof.
